Salahaddin Allahverdiyev: Armenia and Azerbaijan can reach agreement on Karabakh issue without third sides’ participation

PanARMENIAN.Net - With OSCE MG unable to resolve any Karabakh conflict- related issue for almost 20 years, it’s natural for Azerbaijan to state a war to be the only solution. Neither Armenian nor Azeri governments want a war, which might involve other states and lead to unpredictable results, deputy chairman of Azerbaijan’s Social Democratic party, civil rights advocate Salahaddin Allahverdiyev stated.

As he told reporters at SI conference in Yerevan, unless hindered by third parties, Armenia and Azerbaijan can reach agreement on Karabakh issue. “We are hindered by the states pursuing their own economic and political interests in the region,” Allahverdiyev noted, adding that though having interested in the region, Turkey is one of the few non-interfering states.

“Turkey does not take sides with anyone, but only states intention to address issues with Armenia after Karabakh conflict is settled. We are a Turkic state, like some other CIS states. Still, we are Azerbaijani, not Turks,” he said.

Commenting on the work of the conference, Azeri politician stressed that such events promote intensification of bilateral dialogue.

Dwelling on recent amendments to Azerbaijani military doctrine, which runs counter to the state’s constitution, Saladdin Allahverdiyev noted that Azerbaijan referred to international norms while introducing the amendment. “The amendments were introduced based on UN Charter, stipulating for the right of the state, whose territory was occupied by another state, to liberate its territory by force, without violating international war laws. With any problems in internal legislation, international norms should be used as a reference,” he emphasized.
