Visiting Vatican the patriarch of Armenian Orthodox Church Catholicos Garegin II invited Pope John Paul II to visit Armenia. The Pope and Garegin II met privately and the official statements by Vatican says nothing on whether the invitation was received by Pope or not. The AP agency informs that Pope John II did not immediately respond to the invitation, but noted he had hoped to visit Armenia in June 1999. The trip was postponed because of the death of the previous patriarch of Armenia, Garegin I. The pope recalled the late patriarch, saying 'my ties with him were deep and I very much wanted to visit him in Armenia as a sign of friendship.' -0-- ![]() ![]() Grigoryan added that the situation around the world and particularly in the region is very difficult. The Armenian Defense Ministry has denied Azerbaijan's accusations of violating the ceasefire.
