International Year of Astronomy finished in Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net - National Academy of Sciences of Armenia summed up on December 28 the outcomes of passing year, named by UNESCO as the International Year of Astronomy (IYA).



According to Co-Chair of the Armenian Astronomical Society, coordinator of IYA-2009 in Armenia Areg Mikaelyan told about the work done. By RA President's decree 18th of September, the birthday of Viktor Hambardzumyan, one of the founders of theoretical astrophysics, was acknowledged as The Day of Astronomy in Armenia, international prize of Viktor Hambardzumyan was established. In the center of Yerevan a monument to Viktor Hambardzumyan was erected.



As experts noted, the year was a good year in terms of international cooperation: Armenian-Italian and Armenian-French cooperation agreements were signed, director of Byurakan Observatory Hayk Harutyunyan said.
