Armenia won 19 medals at European Weightlifting Championships

Review of April 8-15 main sports events

Weightlifting: Armenia came forth at the European Weightlifting Championships, winning 19 medals – 7 gold, 8 silver and 4 bronze. Tigran Martirosyan (w.c. up to 77kg) and Gevork Poghosyan (w.c. 85 kg) won gold; Smbat Margaryan (w.c. 56 kg), Ara Khachatryan (w.c. 85 kg), Ruben Aleksanyan (w.c +105 kg) and Meline Daluzyan, (w.c. 69kg) won silver; Hripsime Khurshudyan (w.c. 75 kg) won bronze.

PanARMENIAN.Net - “I am happy and proud. Our team proved most efficient. it is wonderful when the results surpass expectations,” coach Ashot Mkhitaryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

He also informed that after a short rest the weightlifters will start training for the World Championships to be held in Turkey in September.

The Weightlifting Federation of Armenia plans holding the European Youth Weightlifting Championships (under 23) in Yerevan in 2011. The sportsmen to participate in the World Championships will be selected after conduction of the Armenian Cup due in July, 2010, according Federation President Samvel Khachatryan.

Ice-hockey: Division III Ice Hockey World Championships kicked off in Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex on April 14, 2010, with Mongolia vs. North Korea match ending 22:1. Armenia beat the South African Republic team 9: 2, wining all three periods.

Chess: Defeating Azeri chess player Eltaj Safarli in the last round, Armenia’s Hrant Melkumian came 6th at the Dubai Open Chess Festival, gaining 7 points.

Melkumian fell behind the tournament leader Eduardo Iturrizaga (Venezuela) by additional results only.

Gabriel Sargissian was the 10th with 6.5 points; Tigran Kotanjian was the 30th. Tigran Petrosyan and Gevorg Harutyunyan came 41st and 50th respectively.

Boxing: Arthur Abraham's third fight in Showtime's Super Six Boxing Classic will come against WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch on August 21 in Nottingham, England. Froch has yet to complete his second stage fight, which takes place on April 24 in Denmark against Abraham's stablemate Mikkel Kessler.

Froch had his first Super Six bout in Nottingham and won a close decision over Andre Dirrell. Abraham had his first round bout in Germany and knocked out Jermain Taylor, but lost by way of disqualification to Dirrell in the second stage of the tournament.

Abraham said that he would like his next fight to take place in Germany and there might be a chance of that if Kessler beat Froch in a few weeks. "After my loss in the United States against Andre Dirrell, I would love to fight in Berlin's O2 World. The arena is my fortress," he said

Tennis: In the best match of the tournament to date, David Nalbandian outlasted Mikhail Youzhny 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5) on Wednesday at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. Nalbandian booked a third-round meeting with Tommy Robredo after two hours and 55 minutes of spirited play.

Football: The third-round matches of the Armenian Top Division ended in 2:2 draw between Ulysses and Banants, 0:0 draw between Impulse and Pyunik and 1:0 Gandzasar win over Shirak.
