As expected, Armenian-Turkish Protocols remained on paper

Recognizing the Armenian Genocide, and together with it also the genocide of all Christian nations, Turkey will have to pay compensation to all: the Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, and even Kurds killed in Dersim.

A year has passed since the signing of the Protocols on normalization of Armenian-Turkish relations, and during this time it became clear that the Protocols have died still unborn, taking with them the ephemeral hope of ever normalizing relations. However, neither the powers standing behind these documents, nor the parties had the courage to admit the futility of the whole idea.

PanARMENIAN.Net - Allowing themselves to be led by the U.S., the EU and to some extent Russia, Armenia and Turkey obviously overlooked the important fact that implementation of the Protocols would be impossible until the question of the Armenian Genocide was finally resolved. And then there appeared Azerbaijan, with its not very clear and totally unfounded claims to participate in the normalization process, and, in fact, in the disruption of arrangements. In this respect, there is a totally separate conversation about Azerbaijan, as she became hostage to Turkey, which de bene esse narrowed the entire process to the regulation of the Karabakh conflict. Or rather, she was led to it by the diplomats, who hoped that everything would turn out successful and there would be peace in the Caucasus, so anticipated by transnational oil and gas companies. It was them who were behind the Protocols, and it seems so far, despite the complete failure, they still hope for progress. However, Turkey and Armenia are not able to reach an agreement. We will not be original if we say that neither will they come to an agreement in the foreseeable future. The wall between the two countries is too strong. It is difficult to judge whether it is good or bad, but it is the reality and must be reckoned with. Irrespective of the fact that some Armenian politicians and experts deceive themselves with dreams, modern Turkey has not changed much from the times of the Ottoman Empire and Kemalism. Moreover, now the Turkish government is pursuing a new policy, already called Neo-Ottomanism. Armenians have no place in this policy, but today, some Armenian media resources, and following them also some Armenian experts speak of another church to be restored in Turkey and almost thank Turkey for the permission to once a year carry out a liturgy in the Holy Cross church, but they never remember the story of the Muslim prayer in Ani. However, in fact this is the real face of today’s Turkish community. The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) together with Devlet Bahceli only carries out orders of the government. Roughly speaking, Bahceli is being used, and, perhaps, with his awareness and consent.

In regard to this process, the past year, however paradoxical it may seem, proved quite successful for Armenia. The second time in the past 20 years the nation has united and has done what was required from it – preventing ratification of the Protocols. It is uncertain how long this situation will last, but in any case, this time we avoided signing treaties and agreements imposed from outside. If we draw a parallel between the Protocols and, for example, the Kars and Moscow agreements, progress is evident. And this is most important. It’s true that the borders of modern Turkey Armenia, unfortunately, accepted back in 1991, becoming a member of the UN, thus in fact confirming the Turkish borders, outlined by the Moscow Treaty. Armenia could not but become a member of the UN then, and now, as a result, Yerevan cannot put in claims against the neighbor. History shows that everything is possible, but only with the consent of all parties, which is not the case now.

With regard to the recognition of the Armenian Genocide it must be noted that Ankara will never do it, otherwise the image of Turkey in Europe - a barbarian with a scimitar - would get its logical confirmation. Turkey is kept in the front line of the EU, from time to time given the hope that she will soon join the Organization. But it is clear that until France and Germany give their consent, neither the United States, nor especially Great Britain will be able to tip the scale in their favor. Next, recognizing the Armenian Genocide, and together with it also the genocide of all Christian nations, Turkey will have to pay compensation to all - the Armenians, Greeks, Assyrians, and even Kurds killed by Mustafa Kemal in Dersim. By some estimates it totals about $100 billion at current rates. No country will be able to pay that much, even having oil reserves equal to Iraq or Iran.

So, the Protocols remained on paper, as expected. And probably this was the best solution. We shall only note that statements, appearing in the press about the text of the Protocols being passed to Azerbaijan by Russia, are beneath criticism. Moreover, they are so unrealistic that they are perceived quite humorously. There was no need to pass the text to anyone; it was known as early as April 23, 2009. Maybe those “experts” speak of certain top secret appendixes, like the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, but one believes it with difficulty. Most likely, it is just another piece of information thrown into the press, specially designed to recall and revive the Protocols. Or it might also be just an attempt to set Armenia against Russia. In both cases the attempt, as well as the entire process is doomed to failure. And exactly that was the culmination of the year since signing the Armenian-Turkish Protocols in Zurich. Not accidentally were the Protocols signed in stunned silence...
