OSCE U.S. Co-chair says resumption of hostilities ‘the worst case’

U.S. Co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group James Warlick, who has just accomplished his orientation visit to the region, said all parties to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict want a peaceful settlement.

“All the sides are committed to a peaceful settlement. No one wants the outcome to be a resumed conflict. That’s the worst case. And we certainly don’t want to see this kind of conflict in the region again,” he said in an interview with the Armenian service of the Voice of America.

“The clear message that I have received not only from political leadership is that the time has come to find a settlement. And to the extent that the U.S., the Minsk Group can facilitate the settlement, we will be there,” he said, adding that he looks forward to working with all parties and finding a way that can lead to durable peace.

“We need to find a realistic path forward and all of the parties should prepare themselves to accept compromises. And we hope that there will be a political will from all the parties,” ambassador Warlick said.

He also voiced concerns about the tension at the contact line between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan. There incidents on a regular basis and people are killed. Where we want to go is to prevent active hostilities from breaking out,” ambassador Warlick said.
