HEYDAR ALIYEV CONDEMNED EU FOR "DOUBLE STANDARDS" AND INTERCEDED FOR TURKEY
Azeri president Heydar Aliyev called "unfair" the EU decision concerning Turkey, according to which the negotiation process on the Turkish Republic's accession to the organization will begin only at the turn of 2004. As reported by "Press-Center.ru" Aliyev expressed such an opinion at the meeting with Turkish ambassador to Azerbaijan Unal Chevikez. In the president's words, Turkey was more entitled to joining the EU than the 10 states to be admitted to the organization in 2004. Aliyev called the decision to grant entry of Greek Cyprus to the EU "another injustice and manifestation of double standards." At the same time he reproached the UN, whose secretary-general Kofi Annan in fact supported the EU regarding Cyprus. In this question, Aliyev emphasized, Azerbaijan will support any decision of Turkey.
