OFFICIAL WASHINGTON CONCERNED WITH SUSPENSION OF BUILDING BAKU-TBILISI-CEYHAN OIL PIPELINE
Official Washington is concerned with suspension of the building of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil export pipeline, the ecological security of which is not endorsed by the Georgian ministry of environment protection. Special advisor of the US Secretary of State on energy resources of the Caspian Steven Mann has arrived in Tbilisi for considering the issue. According to the information provided by Caspian News Agency, the terms of beginning the building of the pipeline remain undecided due to the fact that the ministry of environment protection of Georgia, as well as Dutch and French experts insist on changing the oil pipeline route, which, according to the approved plan, will pass near to Borzhomi mineral water springs. They assert that the possible damage of the mentioned segment will result in destruction of the springs. The experts insist on building the oil pipeline through the Akhaltsikhe region in the south of Georgia. The region is compactly populated by Armenians and the Georgian central authorities do not have an absolute control over it. Moreover, the region has a complex geographic relief, which will make the construction works more expensive and will prolong the fulfillment of the project. According to the approved plan, the oil pipeline length within the Georgian borders is 235 km. At the same time in Steven Mann's words, "US will not suggest changing the pipeline route, as the project ecological aspect will be a good one."
