Turkish troops to visit Armenia on sidelines of int'l treaty

Turkey will send troops to Armenia on Sunday, October 11 as part of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe, Turkish General Staff announced, according to Hurriyet Daily News.

“The inspection will be held in Armenia under Turkey's leadership on October 11-14, 2015, with a Slovakian guest inspector participating,” the statement said.

Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic relations.

In 1993 Turkey reacted to the war in Nagorno Karabakh by closing its borders with Armenia in token of support for Azerbaijan.

Armenia has repeatedly offered to open the border without preconditions. In 2008, Yerevan initiated the process of rapprochement with Ankara, the diplomatic efforts, however, failing due to Turkey’s position.
