Charges brought against former rector of Yerevan State University

Charges have been brought against former rector of Yerevan State University, Aram Simonyan, Armenia's Investigation Committee reveals.

In 2015, Simonyan had the authority to manage the financial activity of the university and sign contracts in the amount of up to AMD 50 million ($103 million).

By reaching an agreement with the director of the company providing security services in the university buildings, the Investigation Committee said, Simonyan wasted more than AMD 34 million ($70,000) by transferring it to the director of the company mentioned above between 2015 and 2019.

The investigation in still underway.

Simonyan stepped down as rector in May 2019 after months of pressure from the Armenian government, with many, among them Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, having long accused him of placing YSU under the strong influence of the former ruling Republican Party.
