Armenia awarding National Hero title to two prominent military men

Two prominent military men will be awarded the title of the National Hero of Armenia, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Tuesday, October 20.

First Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Tiran Khachatryan and Commander of the 5th Army Corps, Major General Andranik Piloyan will be honored after the country's President signs the relevant decrees.

"They continue their heroic fight for the homeland. Long live the Armenian Army," Pashinyan said.

The highest title in Armenia is awarded "for outstanding services of national importance to the Republic of Armenia in defense and strengthening of the state system and creation of important national values."

Pashinyan said on October 15 that the title would be awarded posthumously to military commander, Colonel Vahagn Asatryan.

Azerbaijan, with help from Turkey and Syrian and Libyan mercenaries deployed by Ankara, started a war against Karabakh (Artsakh) in the morning of September 27. The Armenian side has reported deaths and injuries both among the civilian population and the military. Foreign and local journalists too have been injured in Azeri shelling of towns and villages.
