Armenia, U.S. stress Karabakh ceasefire importance at meeting in DC

Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met in Washington, DC to discuss the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict on Friday, October 23.

According to a press release from the Armenian Foreign Ministry, the two reaffirmed the need to implement the agreements reached on immediately establishing a ceasefire, as well as to continue the peace process within the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs.

During the meeting, Mnatsakanyan detailed the war crimes committed by the Azerbaijani Armed Forces during hostilities, including the deliberate targeting of the civilian population and infrastructure of Karabakh, the humiliating treatment, beheadings and murder of civilians and prisoners of war.

Pompeo earlier held a meeting with the Azerbaijani Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov.

Azerbaijan, with help from Turkey and Syrian and Libyan mercenaries deployed by Ankara, started a war against Karabakh (Artsakh) in the morning of September 27. The Armenian side has reported deaths and injuries both among the civilian population and the military. Foreign and local journalists too have been injured in Azeri shelling of towns and villages.

The sides to the Karabakh conflict have agreed on a ceasefire twice before but Azerbaijan has failed to honor the agreements both times.
