President aide denies proposal to sack top military sent back to Pashinyan

President Armen Sarkissian's office has denied sending Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's proposal to dismiss the Chief of the Army General Staff back to the government.

Hasmik Petrosyan, a presidential aide, told PanARMENIAN.Net on Friday, February 26 that the information is not true.

Some news outlets earlier cited former Justice Minister Arpine Hovhannisyan as saying that the President has allegedly refused to sign the proposal to sack Colonel-General Onik Gasparyan and has sent it back to Pashinyan.

Armenia is facing a serious political crisis after the country's top military brass demanded Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's resignation. The PM, however, claims he had already dismissed the chief of the Army General Staff. The parliamentary opposition has already weighed in on the matter, urging against bloodshed and calling for a peaceful transition of power.
