Armenia introducing house arrest as alternative to imprisonment

The Armenian parliament on Wednesday, May 5 approved draft amendments to the country's Criminal Code, introducing house arrest as an alternative to imprisonment, in addition to restrictions on movement already in place.

People serving this type of punishment will be monitored through electronic tags. The changes will come into force beginning from July 1, 2023.

Besides, penal battalions (for privates and non-commissioned officers) and incarceration at the military police (for officers) will also be introduced. The establishment of such battalions and the order of punishment will be approved no later than July 1, 2023.
