A group of Nagorno-Karabakh residents and officials laid flowers the tank memorial in Shushi on May 9, the day Armenians celebrate the liberation of the city in 1992.

Though the city came under Azerbaijan's control during the 44-day war in fall 2020, Armenians still celebrate the holiday, with many hoping to return there one day.

May 9 also commemorates the surrender of Nazi Germany at the end of the Great Patriotic War in 1945.
