Armenia has launched a criminal case into the Azerbaijani military's illegal breach of the state border in the country's south and violation of Armenia's territorial integrity, Gor Abrahamyan, an aide to the Prosecutor General, said in a Facebook post on Friday, May 14.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

According to Abrahamyan, the Azeri troops are now favorably positioned atop one of the hills on the Armenian soil. Upon first breaking into the territory of Armenia, they threatened the Armenian servicemen with violence and declared that the territory belongs to Azerbaijan.

The authorities in Armenia are now probing crimes committed by the members of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces who "illegally crossed the state border and threatened to use violence to transfer part of the territory of the Republic of Armenia to another state."

The criminal case was launched under Article 329 (Illegal state border crossing) and Article 300.2 (Violation of territorial integrity) of the Criminal Code of Armenia.
