CSTO, Armenia foreign policy chiefs discuss border settlement steps

Acting Foreign Minister of Armenia Ara Aivazian held a phone conversation with CSTO Secretary General Stanislav Zas on Friday, May 14 to continue discussions on the steps being undertaken towards resolving the situation on the state border of Armenia resulting from Azerbaijan's border violations since May 12.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).

Aivazian told Zas that letters have been sent on behalf of the Acting Prime Minister of Armenia to Tajikistan- Chairperson-in-Office of the Collective Security Treaty Organization, and the members of the Council with a request to implement the consultation procedure according to Article 2 of the treaty.

The sides exchanged views on the further processes envisaged by the treaty.
