Kremlin: Moscow maintains constant communication with Yerevan, Baku

Russia is in constant communication with Yerevan and Baku to help defuse tensions on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, May 17, RIA Novosti reports.

Peskov said Russian President Vladimir Putin believes there is no alternative to the implementation of trilateral agreements.

Acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said during an extraordinary session of parliament last week that he has written a letter to Putin asking for military help, amid Azerbaijan's incursion into the southern Armenian province of Syunik.

"The Russian and Armenian sides maintain constant communication. We are also in contact with Baku. The President supports the implementation of trilateral agreements which has no alternatives. Vigorous efforts are now being made to defuse tensions and rectify the situation," Peskov told reporters.

The spokesperson, however, failed to answer a question about whether Putin has received Pashinyan's letter. "I can't tell you for sure, but all these issues have naturally been discussed in the course of bilateral contacts," Peskov said.

Pashinyan said earlier that negotiations over the Azerbaijanis' withdrawal will continue on May 19.

On the morning of May 12, the armed forces of Azerbaijan violated the border of Armenia in the southern province of Syunik, advancing 3.5 kilometers and surrounding Sev Lake, which is situated on the border between the two countries but is predominantly a part of Armenia. On May 13, the Azerbaijani military committed more border violations against Armenia, advancing near Vardenis (Gegharkunik province) and Sisian (Syunik province).
