Greece to release Turkish-Armenian writer Sevan Nisanyan

A court in Greece ruled on Friday, January 7 that Turkish-Armenian writer Sevan Nisanyan will be released from custody that same day, the Armenian Embassy in Athens reports.

"According to the decision, he has to leave Greece voluntarily within 15 days. Since Sevan Nisanyan is an Armenian citizen, he can go to Armenia if he wishes," the Embassy added.

The Armenian Embassy said earlier it is taking measures to prevent Nisanyan's extradition to Turkey.

Nisanyan, a 66-year-old linguist and blogger, was detained on the island of Samos more than a week earlier after Greek authorities refused to renew his residence permit, his wife Ira Tzourou said on Facebook and Twitter.
