Armenia won silver at the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad on Tuesday, August 9, with the young team from Uzbekistan snatching victory after all.

In the final round on Tuesday, Armenia defeated Spain 2½-1½, thus leaving Uzbekistan in a must-win situation if they wanted to win gold, which they did.

Uzbekistan, meanwhile, beat the Netherlands in the final round, while India 2 defeated Germany to take the bronze medal.

Since the country's independence, the Armenian men's chess team has won the Chess Olympiad three times in 2006, 2008, and 2012. This time, however, the team were playing without top player Levon Aronian, who now represents the United States.
