Emergencies Minister rules out terrorism as cause of Yerevan blast

Minister of Emergency Situations Armen Pambukhchyan on Monday, August 15 denied that terrorism could be behind the deadly explosion that tore through a market in Yerevan on Sunday.

"Watching the video of the moment of the explosion, it becomes obvious that there can be no question of terrorism, because first there is burning and smoke, and then an explosion,” he said.

“In other words, a fire started inside and spread to the explosives, causing the blast."

At least six people were killed, more than 60 others were injured and an unknown number of people are feared trapped in rubble after the explosion. A five-year-old child and their pregnant mother were among those missing.
