Armenia pledges results in defense, trade cooperation with India

Armenia and India have recently done a lot of work to develop bilateral cooperation in such key areas as defense and regional security, international communications, transport and tourism, Deputy Foreign Minister of Armenia Mnatsakan Safaryan said at the opening of the Yerevan-hosted international conference Armenia-India: New Stimuli for Millennial Relations on Monday, November 28.

The event was organized by the Armenian Foreign Ministry on the 30th anniversary of relations between the two countries.

Strengthening cooperation with India is one of Armenia’s foreign policy priorities, Safaryan said. The diplomat noted that topical issues of the Armenian-Indian agenda will be discussed at the conference, as well as new contours of cooperation will be outlined.

Safaryan emphasized that Armenia can take advantage of India's rapid development to strengthen its defense capabilities, adding that over the past 30 years, relations between Yerevan and New Delhi have developed steadily at the political, economic and humanitarian levels.

"It’s nice to see how India, with its viable democracy and dynamic economy, is achieving new levels of success and achievements in various fields. All this contributes to increasing India's prestige on the world stage. I must state with satisfaction that the centuries-old relations between our countries and peoples, mutual support continues to strengthen, and interstate ties to expand and deepen," Safaryan said.

According to him, in addition to bilateral formats, both countries are actively cooperating on international platforms. Also recently, several business forums have been organized, new joint projects have been initiated.

Safaryan promised reporters later that concrete results in such areas as defense, trade and communications would be publicized. According to him, important meetings have taken place over the past six months.

Reports from India revealed earlier that the country has signed a significant export order for missiles, rockets and ammunition to Armenia amid Azerbaijan’s latest aggression against the territory of the country. While the value of the contracts has not been revealed, it is estimated that weapons worth over Rs 2,000 crore (apx. $244 million) will be supplied to the country over the coming months.
