Armenia, Azerbaijan agree on new border demarcation directions

Armenia and Azerbaijan have agreed to proceed with the next phase of border demarcation, starting at the tri-border with Georgia and moving southward, according to Armenia’s Foreign Ministry.

On January 16, 2025, the 11th meeting of the joint commission on state border demarcation and security took place at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. The meeting was chaired by Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan and Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

"During the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the sequence of border sections for future demarcation. They agreed to begin comprehensive work on the northern section of the border, at the junction of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, and then proceed southward, reaching the Iran-Armenia-Azerbaijan border," the statement said.

The parties also discussed draft guidelines for the implementation of demarcation activities.

An agreement was reached to finalize the date and location of the next meeting through working consultations.
