January 28 marks Army Day in Armenia. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President Vahagn Khachaturyan, and other senior government officials visited the Yerablur Military Pantheon.
During the visit, journalists were not allowed to approach officials or ask questions. Media movement was restricted until the government delegation, led by the Prime Minister, left the pantheon, RFE/RL reports.
According to a government statement, the Prime Minister laid flowers at the graves of Vazgen Sargsyan and Andranik Ozanian and placed a wreath at the memorial honoring fallen freedom fighters.
In his message, President Vahagn Khachaturyan emphasized that the development and modernization of Armenia’s army remain a national priority.
"We are consistently working to enhance the combat readiness of the armed forces, improve service members' social conditions, and modernize military equipment," said the President.
He also addressed service members, commending their dedication and courage.
His Holiness Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II stated that strengthening the army is imperative in the face of serious security challenges.
"The role and legacy of the Armenian Army in defending our newly independent statehood and the rights of our people are invaluable. Strengthening our army is crucial to ensure that our soldiers, with high combat readiness and unwavering spirit, continue their sacred mission to defend the homeland. The solid foundation of the heroic service and feats of our military has always been love for the homeland, devotion, and faithfulness to national values," the Catholicos emphasized.
He added, "We pray for the repose of the souls of the brave heroes who sacrificed their lives for the homeland."
