Greece dismisses claims of missile system transfer to Armenia

Greek Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias has denied reports that Athens intends to provide Armenia with S-300 air defense systems.

He made this statement in response to a parliamentary inquiry from Kyriakos Velopoulos, the leader of the Greek Solution party, which had been submitted in mid-December 2024, according to Sputnik Armenia.

The inquiry referenced reports stating that Greece’s Ministry of Defense plans to decommission Russian-made air defense systems, including the S-300, and replace them with new systems produced in Israel or other countries. According to media sources, following this process, Greece might transfer these systems to Armenia’s air defense forces as part of a "strategic cooperation framework with France and other partners."

Responding to the inquiry, Dendias stated: "In response to the relevant question, I inform you that no decision has been made to transfer air defense systems to third countries. In any case, the primary criterion of the Ministry of National Defense’s policy is to fully maintain Greece’s defense capability at any point in its territory."

*Earlier, a Greek news portal reported that Greece was planning to transfer S-300, Tor-M1, and Osa-AKM air defense systems to Armenia.

On November 27, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova also commented on the issue, stating that Moscow had received no request regarding the transfer of Russian-made air defense systems from Greece to Armenia. She emphasized that bilateral intergovernmental agreements prohibit the re-export of such equipment without Russia’s consent.*
