Blogger Bella Babakhanian detained in Minsk now in Armenia

Armenian blogger Bella Babakhanian, who resided in Belarus, has returned to Armenia despite receiving threats from Azerbaijanis.

Babakhanian, who was detained in Minsk and held for 15 days, has arrived in Armenia. Speaking to journalists at Zvartnots Airport, she expressed disbelief over her return.

"When I was on the plane, I kept telling myself that I wouldn’t believe it until I stepped onto Armenian soil," she said, as reported by Panorama.am .

Babakhanian is known for defending Armenian interests on social media, frequently engaging in debates with Azerbaijanis. Recently, she revealed that Azerbaijanis had threatened her, claiming they were working towards her arrest and extradition to Azerbaijan.

She described the past few days as miraculous, as her situation changed drastically. She recalled a meeting with Belarusian officials, during which she was wary of food, fearing that she might be drugged and sent to Azerbaijan.

Babakhanian admitted that she felt immense relief upon seeing prominent businessman and Prosperous Armenia Party leader Gagik Tsarukyan. However, she initially suspected it might be an Azerbaijani ploy, fearing a lookalike had been sent to lure her onto a plane voluntarily.

The blogger noted that both of her parents are deceased, but she has a brother living in Armenia.

Gagik Tsarukyan’s spokesperson, Iveta Tonoyan, stated that Tsarukyan had helped Babakhanian by resolving her legal issues and inviting her to Armenia. His intervention reportedly facilitated her release.

Blogger Alexander Lapshin was the first to report Babakhanian’s detention in Belarus. According to him, Belarusian authorities had initially planned to extradite her to Azerbaijan, but international outcry prevented this. Babakhanian holds dual citizenship in Armenia and Belarus. She had been charged under Belarusian law for allegedly inciting racial, national, religious, or other forms of social hatred.
