Armenia’s foreign trade drops 40% in January 2025

Armenia’s foreign trade turnover in January 2025 amounted to $1.37 billion, marking a 40% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. According to the Statistical Committee, Armenia’s key trade partners are Russia, the UAE, China, and the European Union, which together account for 68.1% of the country’s trade.

Despite maintaining its leading position, trade with Russia saw a steep decline, dropping to $478 million—53.8% less than in January 2024. Armenian exports to Russia fell by 46.1% to $166 million, while imports shrank by 61.3%, totaling $288 million, according to CivilNet.

China became Armenia’s second-largest trade partner, recording a modest 0.2% increase, reaching $200 million. However, Armenian exports to China plummeted by 60% to $38 million, while imports from China surged by 54%, reaching $161.4 million.

Trade with the EU amounted to $154 million, up from $140 million the previous year. Exports to the EU increased by 8.4% to $36.3 million, while imports grew by 10.4%, reaching $118 million.

Trade with the UAE dropped by 59%, totaling $139 million. Exports to the UAE decreased by 60.7%, whereas imports, despite being small in volume, nearly doubled to $7.1 million.

The sharp 60% drop in imports from Russia and exports to the UAE reflects a decline in Armenia’s re-export activities, a trend observed since late 2024. Customs data show that Russia remains the primary source of imported gold (95.9%), while the UAE continues to be the main export destination (84.2%).
