EU reports progress on visa liberalization with Armenia

President of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturyan and Head of the EU Delegation to Armenia, Ambassador Vassilis Maragos, exchanged views on the ongoing development of the new Armenia-EU "Partnership Agenda."

Ambassador Maragos informed the President about recent positive developments in the visa liberalization process, emphasizing the importance of sustained and mutually beneficial cooperation in this area.

During their meeting, the sides also discussed various sectoral initiatives and programs supported by the EU. They explored prospects for collaboration in energy, education, economy, and other fields.

Maragos presented the upcoming events planned for Europe Day, highlighting their inclusive nature and significance for increasing public awareness in Armenia and deepening Armenia-EU relations.

Key topics also included democratic reforms and the EU-supported humanitarian and social initiatives in Armenia.

Both sides emphasized the need to further develop their partnership and implement new joint programs aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

On March 26, Armenia’s National Assembly approved a bill in its final reading to launch the process of joining the EU. The initiative was introduced by the “Eurovote” civil movement and approved by the government on January 9. However, the EU has not issued an official invitation for membership, and opposition forces have criticized the bill as legally absurd. President Khachaturyan has signed the law. Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk stated that Armenia “cannot sit on two chairs” and will have to choose between the Eurasian Economic Union and the EU.
