Opposition bloc sets terms for impeachment support

The Armenia faction has unanimously reaffirmed its readiness to contribute the signatures of all 28 of its MPs to initiate Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s impeachment, provided the organizers of the initiative secure the additional 8 required signatures and publicly confirm their ability and responsibility to mobilize the necessary public support.

In a public statement, the faction emphasized it has consistently supported initiatives aimed at removing Pashinyan from office, considering his ouster a vital necessity for the nation. The statement also clarified that the faction was the first to propose applying the legal mechanism of impeachment.

The faction stressed that there are serious legal and political grounds for initiating a no-confidence motion. However, the process can only begin in parliament if at least 36 MPs sign the initiative, with a final vote requiring a simple majority of 54 votes.

The Armenia faction warned that achieving this threshold is impossible without strong, mass public pressure from the streets. Even then, such pressure does not guarantee the required number of votes.

The statement also questioned the ability of the current initiators—who do not represent political parties or movements—to generate this mass protest or to bear political responsibility for a possible failure.

Due to these concerns, the faction expressed doubt about the true objectives of the impeachment initiative. Nevertheless, it confirmed its willingness to provide all 28 signatures if the missing 8 are secured and organizers publicly declare their readiness to lead the necessary public mobilization.

The faction also condemned any attempts to target its members or speak to them in threatening terms, warning that such behavior will not go unanswered.

“This conduct raises the question of whether the initiative truly aims to remove Nikol Pashinyan, or if it is actually meant to target the Armenia faction,” the statement concluded.

On April 28, individual letters from the We Are Awake movement were delivered to all MPs, urging them to initiate a no-confidence motion against Nikol Pashinyan within a 10-day timeframe.
