Aram Sargsyan, leader of the Republic Party, declared in a Facebook post that even if they step down from official positions, his party will stay loyal to the coalition agreement and will not allow Yerevan to be handed over to pro-Russian actors.
“The Republic Party did not enter a coalition with the Civil Contract party in Yerevan out of obsession with holding office. We are guided by principles. Even if we resign from our posts, we’ll remain faithful to the coalition memorandum and will not give the capital to pro-Russian forces. Don’t count on it,” Sargsyan wrote.
Former Yerevan Mayor Hayk Marutyan, responding to recent incidents in the Nor Nork district, accused the ruling Civil Contract party of enabling what he called a “pseudo-European, but actually criminally-influenced” Republic Party in order to retain power, sacrificing public welfare and the rule of law in the process.
In turn, the Republic Party described the Nor Nork incident as a deliberately planned provocation aimed not at the district leader or mayor, but at Armenia’s independence and sovereignty. The party added that civil servants have become the most vulnerable group in this political conflict.
