Activists from the Victory 9/45 movement have restored an abandoned mass grave of Soviet soldiers on the outskirts of Alaverdi, a town in Armenia’s Lori Province.
The project was supported by 99-year-old WWII veteran Mikhail Sahakyan, who reached Brest during the war, according to Sputnik Armenia. He assisted 20 volunteers from the Eurasia organization in the restoration effort.
The Victory 9/45 movement organizes the upkeep of World War II graves across various post-Soviet countries. “It’s vital that monuments to fallen heroes—wherever they are—are not forgotten or left to decay. Memory and gratitude are about actions. Every tended grave, every cleaned nameplate is a sign that their heroism is not forgotten,” said Boris Chernyshov, Deputy Speaker of Russia’s State Duma and head of the movement’s organizing committee.
The Alaverdi memorial complex is once again becoming a place of remembrance.
