Ombudsperson urges stronger media protection mechanisms

In a message marking World Press Freedom Day, Armenia’s Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan emphasized the need to develop and implement robust mechanisms that guarantee the free and secure operation of media outlets.

She stressed that journalism must also be carried out in line with high ethical standards.

“This day is another opportunity to highlight the vital and demanding mission you fulfill, and to reaffirm the exceptional value of your work in strengthening democracy and the rule of law,” she stated.

Manasyan underscored the importance of unobstructed media activity in her 2024 annual report, expressing concern over incidents involving the targeting of journalists and obstruction of their professional duties.

She insisted the state must take clear and focused steps to ensure a favorable environment for media and full protection for journalists.

Specifically, she said mechanisms must be put in place to guarantee media freedom and safety, prevent violations of journalists’ rights, and ensure accountability for such violations.

At the same time, she emphasized that journalists must maintain ethical standards and responsible reporting, avoiding hate speech and discrimination in all forms.

“As Armenia’s Human Rights Defender, I reaffirm my commitment to doing everything possible to protect your freedom and ensure your unobstructed work,” the message read.

She concluded by congratulating the media on the occasion and wishing them success in promoting democracy and the rule of law.
