Simonyan says peace talks with Azerbaijan intensify

Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Alen Simonyan stated that discussions over signing a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan are actively underway, Armenpress reported.

Asked whether any preliminary arrangements had been made regarding the agreement, Simonyan responded, “Yes, discussions are taking place and they are very active. I don't want to talk about it now so as not to hinder the process.”

On March 13, Armenia and Azerbaijan announced they had reached consensus on the text of a peace agreement. Following this, Armenia invited Azerbaijan to start consultations to determine the date and location for signing the agreement. However, Baku has since introduced new preconditions for signing.

Azerbaijan continues to claim—falsely, according to Armenia—that the Armenian Constitution contains territorial claims against it. Baku insists that Armenia must amend its Constitution and has also demanded the dissolution of the OSCE Minsk Group before any agreement can be signed.

In response, Armenia proposed that both sides simultaneously sign the peace agreement and a joint request to the OSCE regarding the group’s dissolution. As for the Azerbaijani claims about Armenia’s Constitution, Yerevan has reiterated that the Constitution contains no territorial claims against Azerbaijan and that any constitutional changes are a matter of Armenia’s internal affairs.
