Jirair Sefilian, a member of the National Democratic Alliance council, was questioned on May 12 by the Investigative Committee in connection with a separate strand of the case related to the October 27 terrorist attack.
According to attorney Araik Papikyan, the interrogation stemmed from a statement made by Samvel Babayan, who claimed that Sefilian had called him after the attack and spoken about the incident.
Sefilian confirmed during questioning that he spoke with Babayan on the day of the attack, but said he was surprised Babayan attributed a remark to him 25 years later, which he denies ever making.
He added that he had already been questioned in the original October 27 investigation and had disclosed everything he knew at the time.
In 1999, an armed group led by Nairi Hunanyan stormed the Armenian parliament chamber, killing Speaker Karen Demirchyan, Prime Minister Vazgen Sargsyan, Deputy Speakers Yuri Bakhshyan and Ruben Miroyan, MPs Armenak Armenakyan, Mikael Kotanyan, Henrik Abrahamyan, and Minister Leonard Petrosyan. In addition to the eight fatalities, eight others were injured.
In December 2003, Nairi Hunanyan and five of his accomplices were sentenced to life in prison, while another member received a 14-year term.
Later, life-sentenced Vram Galstyan committed suicide, and Hamlet Stepanyan, who had received a 14-year sentence, died unexpectedly. In summer 2024, Ashot Knyazyan, another life-term convict in the case, died in Nubarashen penitentiary.
Relatives of the victims continue to insist that the true masterminds behind the October 27 attack remain unidentified.
