War record no excuse for corruption, says minister

Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan, during a government press briefing, responded to a journalist's question on why his "crooked snob" comment targeted only Levon Kocharyan, and not other MPs like Arsen Torosyan, Vahagn Aleksanyan, and Andranik Kocharyan, who have also allegedly used profanities in Parliament. Papoyan said he had heard only one offensive remark.

“I heard one curse word in Parliament,” he stated, according to Panorama.am .

The minister added that any individual who “is insignificant and becomes a billionaire after taking public office” deserves even harsher judgment than what he had expressed in his previous post.

Responding to the observation that he was referring to a former President of Artsakh who had served in the war, Papoyan said, “Having fought in the Artsakh war cannot justify being a thief or a corrupt person.”

He also noted that if anyone has an issue with his statements, they are welcome to go to the Prosecutor’s Office and prove otherwise.

On May 14, a scuffle broke out in the National Assembly following a speech by Deputy Speaker Hakob Arshakyan, which followed a statement by Armenia faction MP Levon Kocharyan. The tension escalated, leading Kocharyan to leave the chamber.

Former MP Edmon Marukyan commented on Facebook, calling the rhetoric used by some members of the ruling Civil Contract faction a disgrace.
