MP: former presidents avoid facing parliament

Vahagn Aleksanyan, a member of the Civil Contract faction in Armenia's National Assembly, stated during a press briefing that the opposition is reluctant to present any of its leaders before the parliament. He emphasized that former Presidents Robert Kocharyan and Serzh Sargsyan are particularly apprehensive about speaking from the parliamentary podium.

"This opposition is afraid to bring any of its leaders to stand before this National Assembly because they understand that none of their leaders are politically capable of standing before this parliament, answering questions, and listening to speeches," Aleksanyan said, according to 1lurer.am .

He further asserted that Kocharyan and Sargsyan are "terrified" of addressing the parliament. "If they believe otherwise, let them come and stand here, but they won't. Their factions are capable of gathering signatures to present them before this podium," he added.

When asked why the former presidents are so fearful, Alexanyan attributed it to their discomfort with politics and parliamentary procedures. "Robert Kocharyan's team is one thing; he himself is another. I assure you, Robert Kocharyan is terrified," he stated.

Regarding the incident on May 14 in the National Assembly, where a scuffle occurred, journalists inquired about the agitated behavior of Armenia faction MP Levon Kocharyan. They questioned whether discussions about properties belonging to his father and family the previous day were the cause.

Aleksanyan responded that this was indeed the primary reason. "It couldn't be otherwise because coming to the parliamentary podium and saying, 'You told us we had 4 billion, but only 200 million dollars are being demanded from us at this moment'—sorry, but this is laughable. Tomorrow they'll come and say, 'You said Robert Kocharyan killed 30-40 people, but it turns out he only killed 20.' Is this the line that's going to continue?" he remarked.

When asked if the incident in the parliament indicates the presence of parliamentary democracy, Aleksanyan replied, "Of course not, because Robert Kocharyan's son cannot serve as a vivid example of parliamentarism."

Speaking about the speech by Civil Contract faction MP Arsen Torosyan, Aleksanyan noted that the provocative and disrespectful behavior of opposition members often leads to situations where they, being human, cannot restrain themselves in the heat of the moment.

The previous day, Deputy Speaker Hakob Arshakyan and Armenia faction MP Levon Kocharyan had an argument in the session hall, after which an incident occurred between ruling and opposition MPs.
