Council of Europe chief plans peace talks with Armenia, Azerbaijan

Secretary General of the Council of Europe Alain Berset will hold discussions with Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding a potential peace agreement between the two countries.

He made this statement during a press briefing at the 6th summit of the European Political Community, reports Armenpress.

“Talks on peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan are very important. Next month I will hold discussions with both Armenia and Azerbaijan. We must work together to make the best decisions for the region’s stability,” Berset stated.

High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas announced she will meet Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during the same summit in Tirana.

“I have been to Azerbaijan, and here [in Tirana, the capital of Albania], I will meet Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan,” Kallas said, adding that she also plans to visit Armenia soon.

The EU's top diplomat expressed hope that a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan will be signed soon.

“Azerbaijan and Armenia are very close to reaching an agreement. I believe it is in everyone’s interest that they sign this peace deal, which would eliminate another conflict,” the EU foreign affairs chief emphasized.

Prime Minister Pashinyan is in Albania on a working visit to attend the sixth summit of the European Political Community.
