Ex-President says defeat symbol can't bring peace

Armenia’s second President, Robert Kocharyan, stated in interviews with four media outlets that he does not believe the current leadership is capable of establishing real peace.

“I don't believe that the symbol of defeat can bring a dignified peace. The person handling this has other motivations. He wants a piece of paper about Nikol Pashinyan, and it has nothing to do with peace,” Kocharyan said, as reported by Panorama.am .

According to him, it is evident that Pashinyan is begging for a document, possibly an empty one, intended for internal political gain.

“We cannot expect anything meaningful in this context. There is a failed leader whose sole goal is to cling to power at any cost. And there are players around this process who are evaluating whether or not it’s worth supporting him in this,” he said.

Kocharyan also addressed the possibility that the issue of returning prisoners might be used as leverage in the peace process.

“I don't think this government cares about the issue of captives. Those who have been captured are people who could return and, with their authority and influence, organize displaced persons from Karabakh. This is not something the current authorities want,” he said.

He added that while peace is desirable for everyone, the key issue is who is leading the process.

“A person driven by such motivations cannot think about the state, nor about national interests. We all want peace, but again, who is the one handling this, what drives them? Don’t you see what this man wants? He wants a piece of paper about Nikol Pashinyan, and that has nothing to do with peace. The footage from Albania is disgraceful—it shows the posture of someone who has lost all dignity, cowering like a subordinate before his superiors. This body language reveals everything about his state. Ask any psychologist—there’s nothing useful this man can offer to the country,” Kocharyan emphasized.
