Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan considers the motion to express no confidence in Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan to have an almost zero chance of success.
“I’m not sure this is the right move. Some promoters of this initiative don’t fully understand what they’re doing. I haven’t heard anyone say this is a realistic scenario — even the initiators themselves say, ‘Well, what’s the harm in trying?’” Kocharyan said, referring to Edmon Marukyan, leader of the Bright Armenia party, who was recently nominated by MPs Hovik Aghazaryan and Hakob Aslanyan to replace Pashinyan.
“I’m a pragmatic person, and I find no interest in getting involved in a process that is near certain to fail. I can see who might be interested in it. Perhaps there’s someone whose life dream is to be a prime ministerial candidate for 48 hours. If getting media attention for two days is someone’s dream, that doesn’t mean we should play supporting roles in making that dream come true,” Kocharyan added, as reported by Armenpress.
Meanwhile, “We Are Awake” movement members Edgar Ghazaryan and Narek Malyan have sent letters to all MPs urging them to back the initiative. The “Armenia” faction has expressed skepticism about the effort, questioning whether its real aim is to target their alliance.
The other opposition force, “I Have Honor,” said it is open to initiating the process but does not currently have a candidate for prime minister. They expressed readiness to discuss possible candidates.
Subsequently, MPs Hovik Aghazaryan and Hakob Aslanyan officially proposed Edmon Marukyan as a candidate. Marukyan accepted the nomination and called on opposition factions to meet and devise joint actions.
The former president made his comments in interviews with News.am, Politic.am , Yerevan Today, and Channel 5.
