Gegharkunik governor sees stable border, anticipates demarcation

Governor of Gegharkunik Karen Sargsyan said in a televised interview with Public TV that the situation along the provincial border is relatively stable. According to him, the few incidents reported have not significantly affected the daily lives of local residents.

He expressed confidence that the border delimitation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan will eventually include Gegharkunik as well, Auroranews.am reports.

“I believe the delimitation process will continue and extend through our province too. We will see clear border definitions here as well, which will result in Azerbaijani troops withdrawing. We do not classify some villages as border settlements because we refuse to accept that status as permanent. Azerbaijani forces will pull back, and those communities will resume peaceful lives,” Sargsyan stated.

On January 16, Armenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that an agreement had been reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on a new segment of the border delimitation. The plan involves beginning from the northern point where Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia meet, extending southward to where the Armenian and Azerbaijani borders meet Iran.
