On the morning of May 21, Iran executed the man who attacked the Azerbaijani embassy. The sentence was carried out against Yasin Huseynzadeh, the individual responsible for organizing the embassy attack, APA reports.
Huseynzadeh’s trial lasted two years. The Supreme Court of Iran upheld the death sentence, and the case was sent to Tehran for execution.
He was apprehended at the scene of the attack.
The incident occurred early on January 27, 2023. Armed with a Kalashnikov rifle, the assailant breached the embassy’s guard post and shot dead the head of the security service, Orkhan Askerov. Vasif Taghiyev and Mahir Imanov were wounded while trying to stop the attack.
Following the attack, embassy operations were suspended. On January 29, 2023, all staff members and their families were evacuated to Baku. Later, after diplomatic talks between Azerbaijan and Iran, the embassy resumed operations at a new location on July 15, 2024. The ambassador and current personnel returned to Tehran.
