Armenia’s Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has confirmed that the country has not officially submitted a membership application to the European Union and that no negotiations are taking place in that direction.
Responding to a question from a Russian journalist during a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart, Mirzoyan addressed how Armenia balances its membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) with European integration efforts, according to Radar.am .
“The Republic of Armenia has not applied for EU membership, no negotiations are ongoing in that direction, and therefore the question posed in such a context is not applicable. I cannot comment on a scenario that does not exist,” Mirzoyan said.
On March 26, Armenia’s National Assembly approved in a final reading a bill proposing the launch of an EU accession process. This initiative had earlier received Cabinet approval on January 9 and was introduced by the civil group “EuroVote.” Nevertheless, the EU has not extended an official invitation to Armenia for membership talks. Opposition parties have criticized the bill, calling it legally nonsensical. The President of Armenia has signed the bill into law.
Meanwhile, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk has also stated that Armenia “cannot sit on two chairs” and will have to choose between the EAEU and the EU.
