Armenia questions Georgia's customs checks on brandy exports

Armenia is closely monitoring Georgia's customs practices after local brandy producers raised concerns about inspections of their exports.

Chairman of Armenia’s State Revenue Committee, Eduard Hakobyan, stated that the issue of brandy exports is a priority and is under constant supervision. He emphasized that Armenian authorities are in continuous contact with their Georgian counterparts.

“We’re not just planning to act—we are actively addressing it. We maintain direct communication with our partners in Georgia, and we’re holding ongoing discussions to identify the root cause of these repeated examinations,” Hakobyan told Pastinfo.

According to Hakobyan, the Georgian side claims that such checks are part of standard customs procedures. If a potential risk is identified, customs officers may collect product samples for further examination.

He reassured that this matter is under constant observation and that targeted efforts are being made to find a resolution.

“I want to stress that this remains a daily focus for us,” he added.

In recent days, protests have been held in response to actions taken by Georgian customs authorities. Georgia, acting as a transit country, has selectively taken samples of alcoholic products exported from various Armenian factories. This has sparked dissatisfaction among Armenian producers, who argue that the goods are not intended for the Georgian market and consider the inspections unjustified interference.
