Caucasian red deer, once considered extinct in Armenia and listed in the national Red Book, are expected to produce offspring in the wild for the first time this year. Experts say this marks a significant milestone in the species’ recovery program.

On May 22, nine more of these deer were released into the forests near Debet village. Since 2018, 14 deer had been transferred from Iran to Armenia through an initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), reports RFE/RL.

The deer were initially bred in Dilijan National Park. Their offspring have now been released into various forest areas across the country.

Karen Manvelyan, WWF Armenia’s program director, stated: “Deer released in past years have adapted well to Armenia’s wilderness. They have not fallen prey to predators, and they were vaccinated against diseases before release.”

Each deer is equipped with a radio-collar, allowing experts to monitor their movement and behavior.

Two non-governmental organizations are responsible for the animals’ care and conduct regular monitoring in collaboration with the eco-patrol service.
