Republican Party sees impeachment as key tool against PM

The Republican Party of Armenia currently views impeachment as the most realistic tool to remove Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan from office, rather than street protests. This was stated in parliament by Hayk Mamijanyan, leader of the “I Have Honor” faction.

Mamijanyan argued that the Prime Minister’s approval rating has declined, making now the ideal time for his removal, according to Armenpress.

He emphasized that impeachment is the only process in which the Prime Minister has no involvement and cannot exert influence.

“For this and a thousand other reasons, we believe that the no-confidence tool is currently the most realistic and likely option,” Mamijanyan said.

He also noted that the Republican Party is not nominating a candidate for prime minister as part of the impeachment proceedings, so as not to complicate the already difficult process with political ambitions.

“Until now, we have always followed the path of street struggle and public consolidation, ultimately leading to a no-confidence vote. This time, the initiators propose reversing that logic—using the impeachment process as a trigger for broader street consolidation,” he added.

Letters proposing a no-confidence motion were previously sent to National Assembly members by “We Are Awake” movement figures Narek Malian and Edgar Ghazaryan. The “I Have Honor” faction expressed readiness to initiate the process, emphasizing they would not nominate a candidate but are open to discussions around one.

The other opposition faction, Armenia, questioned the initiative, suspecting it might be aimed more at targeting their alliance than removing the current government.

Separately, independent MPs Hovik Aghazaryan and Hakob Aslanyan announced another impeachment initiative, proposing Edmon Marukyan, leader of the “Bright Armenia” party, as a candidate. However, neither opposition faction supported this proposal.
