Citizens protest government over church remarks

A group of citizens staged a protest in front of the Armenian government's building, expressing support for the Armenian Apostolic Church and national spiritual values.

The demonstration began with a flashmob, where participants hung posters on a white rope using clothespins. The posters bore messages such as "Our disaster is caused by satanic authorities," "Curse the traitors, shame on the silent," and "The Armenian Apostolic Holy Church is the foundation of the Armenian nation," as reported by Sputnik Armenia.

One participant, Eleonora Manandyan, stated, "I'm not a member of any organization, just a concerned citizen. Everyone is dissatisfied now; the struggle is maturing, but for some reason, no one dares to take to the streets. Today, our conscience doesn't allow us to stay home. For five years, Nikol has been betraying Armenia, trampling all national values, dismantling the entire state system, and disintegrating all its components. The state simply doesn't function. After all this, Nikol is launching the most severe initiative to destroy our foundation—the Armenian Apostolic Church."

Manandyan questioned the Armenian people, asking where they are when Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan desecrates the Armenian Church. The protesters are not demanding Pashinyan's resignation but are calling for his prosecution.

"I demand the prosecution not only of Nikol but also of his partner for violating all moral laws. I understand they lack education and grew up in those basements, and with 'Education is Fashionable' campaigns, they try to convince themselves they want education," Manandyan added.

The protesters urged people to take to the streets, emphasizing that it doesn't matter whether others join them; what matters is showing the authorities that desecrating the church is unacceptable.

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, responding to criticism from clergy following his comparison of churches to storage rooms during a government session, made offensive remarks towards church officials. He posted several Facebook messages with such content, joined by his wife, Anna Hakobyan, who called the clergy "the country's top pedophiles."

Pashinyan has stated that the state should play a key role in the election process of the Catholicos of All Armenians.
