Russian hackers reportedly target Armenian government websites

Hackers affiliated with Russia’s military intelligence agency, the Main Directorate of the General Staff (commonly known by its former name GRU), specifically its Unit 29155, have targeted websites of Armenian government institutions between 2022 and 2024, reports Radar.am, citing an investigation by The Insider.

In September 2024, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation released an indictment against this group, which is notorious for its role in the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury.

According to the findings, attacks were carried out on:

  • The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: November 13, 2022 (22:51)
  • The same website: March 25, 2023 (01:45)
  • The Armenian Ministry of Health website: May 13, 2023 (21:40)
  • Again the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website: February 2, 2024 (14:53)

Back in 2017, The Insider had revealed the existence of other Russian cyber units such as Unit 26165, known as Fancy Bear or APT28, responsible for hacking the websites of Hillary Clinton, Emmanuel Macron, and various international organizations.

Later, another GRU-affiliated group, Sandworm (Unit 74455), was identified as the creator of the destructive NotPetya virus, which disrupted Ukraine’s power grid and launched attacks against NATO military infrastructure.
