Trump says Putin plans response to Ukraine drone attacks

In a 75-minute phone conversation on June 4, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the recent escalation in the Ukraine conflict. Putin expressed a strong intention to retaliate against Ukraine following a large-scale drone attack that damaged or destroyed dozens of Russian aircraft, including targets deep within Siberia.

The Ukrainian operation, dubbed "Operation Spider's Web," marked one of the most extensive drone campaigns of the war. Ukrainian forces reportedly struck five Russian airbases using over 100 drones, damaging more than 40 aircraft.

Trump described the call as constructive but noted it would not lead to immediate peace. He said Putin was firm about Russia's need to respond, raising concerns about further escalation.

The leaders also discussed Iran's nuclear ambitions, with both agreeing that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons. Putin reportedly expressed readiness to participate in new nuclear negotiations involving Tehran.

Despite ongoing diplomatic efforts, including talks in Istanbul, no major breakthroughs have been achieved. Ukraine rejected Russia’s demands for troop withdrawal and military neutrality, while Moscow continues to press for those terms.

Trump confirmed that the U.S. had not been informed in advance about Ukraine’s drone strikes. The two presidents agreed to maintain communication on the Ukraine issue and other international matters. They also reviewed bilateral relations and the potential for renewed cooperation.

Trump also noted his role in easing tensions between India and Pakistan, and welcomed Russia’s possible involvement in nuclear talks with Iran.
