Еx-official: Artsakh sacrificed for historic Azerbaijan accord

Artak Zakaryan, a member of the Executive Body of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), has responded to a statement by Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, who recently said that “we have a significant, unprecedented document with Azerbaijan, and negotiations are complete.”

According to Zakaryan, this statement inadvertently confirms one of the primary goals of the 2018 change of power in Armenia. He shared his view on Facebook.

“The person calling the treacherous policy that surrendered Artsakh through war and caused over 5,000 deaths an 'achievement' is Ararat Mirzoyan. It turns out that Artsakh was handed over and ethnic cleansing was carried out to have a ‘significant, unprecedented’ document with Azerbaijan,” Zakaryan wrote. “This effectively announces—more precisely, confesses—one of the main goals behind the 2018 regime takeover.”

He added that Mirzoyan, “despite himself, has accurately characterized the document he negotiated.” Given the disastrous realities and statements from both Armenian authorities and Azerbaijani occupiers, Zakaryan argued the deal is indeed unprecedented.

“Neither under Levon Ter-Petrosyan, nor Robert Kocharyan, nor Serzh Sargsyan could anyone have imagined that such a disastrous and nationally shameful capitulation would be forced upon the Armenian people—even under the worst circumstances,” he said. “And the ones forcing it are your so-called ‘legitimate’ rulers.”

Zakaryan emphasized that it was unprecedented for an Armenian leader to recognize Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan—especially while the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs still considered the conflict unresolved. He also pointed to:

  • The occupation of Armenian territories
  • The complete depopulation and forced displacement of Artsakh Armenians
  • Pressure to remove key constitutional provisions
  • Azerbaijani demands to "return" to Armenia and regain various rights
  • The erasure of Artsakh repatriation from international agendas
  • Endless talk of an uncontrolled corridor through Syunik
  • Land concessions in Tavush during so-called border demarcations
  • And overall, an unprecedented level of internal and external damage caused by current policies.

He further noted that, historically, it is unprecedented for a state to undermine its own foundations for the sake of what he called a fake and unreliable “peace,” meant only to deceive the people and win votes.

P.S. “I forgot to add—Ararat also admits there's no constructive dialogue with Azerbaijan on prisoners. But honestly, with whom do you have constructive dialogue at all?” he concluded.
