Pro- and anti-Russian demonstrators clash in Yerevan

A confrontation unfolded outside Armenia’s National Assembly as pro-Western demonstrators protesting the official visit of Valentina Matviyenko, Chair of Russia’s Federation Council, were met by pro-Russian counterprotesters. The initial protest, led by pro-Western groups including For the Republic party, denounced Russia’s presence in Armenia.

For the Republic party leader Arman Babajanyan, holding a sign and chanting in Russian, shouted slogans such as “Russia, get out of Armenia,” “traitors,” and “traders,” reports Panorama.am .

“Our goal is to show that Armenia no longer sees Russia as an ally. Russia is waging a hybrid war against Armenia, and wars are waged by enemies. They shouldn’t treat this country like their private store. It’s no coincidence that Matviyenko avoided a press conference—she’s dodging painful questions,” Babajanyan said.

Tigran Khzmalyan, leader of the European Party of Armenia, emphasized that while they do not directly accuse Russia, they criticize the Armenian government. “Parliament voted 64 days ago to begin the process of EU accession, yet no formal application has been submitted,” he said.

Numerous police officers, including Deputy Chief of Police Karen Hakobyan, were deployed to the scene. Hakobyan declined to answer reporters’ questions, stating only that public order was being maintained.

The situation escalated when pro-Russian citizens arrived, carrying posters reading “brotherly peoples” and “Armenia and Russia—eternal allies,” according to Aysor.am . Unlike the pro-Western activists, they came to welcome Matviyenko’s visit.

“These provocateurs should be removed, not us—we’re staying here. This group is instigating conflict,” said Ruzanna Stepanyan, deputy chair of the conservative Haykandukht party, pointing to the opposing demonstrators.

Supporters of the Russian delegation shouted “Turkish agents” at their opponents. “Has the EU responded to your flag waving here? Has anyone in Europe welcomed you or said anything at all? Armenia’s trade and survival depend on Russia. These provocateurs want to turn our country into a Turkish province. That’s why we’re here—to welcome Matviyenko and reaffirm our enduring friendship with Russia,” Stepanyan stated.
